Giving Your Team Permission to Do Their Job with Duayne
Are you building a team, or are you just hiring help?
Do you feel like you have to be involved in everything to make sure the job gets done right? Are you struggling to grow your business because you can’t let go of what’s happening on site?
You’re not alone. And it could be the very thing holding your business back.
On this Zoom call, Duayne will share how his tradie mindset kept him stuck in Operator mode for years, preventing him from building a business that could run without him. For almost 15 years, Duayne believed success meant building a big team. More people meant more work completed and, ultimately, more money. He had no trouble finding people or getting jobs done on site. The problem was that he became responsible for everything. He was constantly checking, fixing, and holding people’s hands, leaving little time for himself or his family.
The truth is, building a team is about more than hiring good people and putting systems in place.
To build a profitable business that can grow without relying on you for every decision, your team needs clear roles, responsibilities, expectations, and processes. But even with all of that in place, there’s still one big challenge.
You have to let them do their job.
If you’re constantly stepping in, checking everything and taking control when things don’t go to plan, you’re not building a team. You’re just hiring people to help you do your job.
And this is where many Builders get stuck.
Letting go is uncomfortable. It means trusting others to make decisions, work through problems, and sometimes make mistakes along the way. When you’ve spent years building your business, it’s hard to watch someone do things differently to how you would. But you can’t build a business that runs without you if you insist on being involved in everything.
On this call, Duayne will talk about what it takes to move from being the person who gets everything done, to the business owner who builds a team that can get things done without them.
Because the biggest step in growing your business might not be doing more, hiring more people or creating more systems.
It might be learning when to step back and give your team permission to do their job.
3 objectives for the Zoom session
- Understand the difference between hiring help and building a team. Recognise the behaviours that keep you stuck in Operator mode and prevent your business from growing.
- Create clarity around roles and responsibilities. Understand how clear expectations, responsibilities and processes empower your team to take ownership of their work.
- Learn to let go without losing control. Identify how to step back, build trust and allow your team to solve problems without needing you to oversee every decision.
3 action items to work on after the call
- Identify one task you’re holding onto. Choose one responsibility you regularly take on that someone in your team could manage. Identify what is stopping you from handing it over.
- Set clear expectations for that task. Define the outcome you expect, the standards to be met, and the boundaries within which your team member can make decisions.
- Delegate the task and resist stepping in. Give the responsibility to the right person, agree on when you’ll check in, and allow them to work through challenges. Review the outcome together and use mistakes as opportunities to improve.
