Protecting Your Most Important Asset – Your Marriage and Romantic Relationship with Travis Doecke, Counsellor and Psychotherapist
During this session, we will explore some fundamental requirements for building a healthy and meaningful marriage, as well as the signs, symptoms and stress points that can affect the development and growth of your marriage.
We will briefly explore the difficult terrain of integrating the personal and business sides, examining how the skill sets overlap and how they differ, and employing the right tactics at the right time.
A key takeaway will be understanding that the best marriages are constantly in motion; they are never “set and forget.” Learning to be flexible, available, present, and considerate is a key way to ensure you always remain a student of your partner and grow together to go together.
Learning Objectives: from this session, you will learn about:
- Your marriage and romantic relationship are just like building a house. It’s also very different. Be nimble, adjust accordingly and understand which season of marriage you are in.
- The elements that show you’re doing okay in your marriage, and the signs, symptoms and stress points that can indicate your marriage requires a little investment.
- Never stop learning about your partner. Grow together to go together. Protect the couple bubble. Go deeper with your partner, not just further.
Action Items: after this session you should:
- ACTION – Arrange a date night. Get the kids sorted, create some space for just the two of you. Initiate discussion using conversation cards or other games. Do something different. And do your best not to discuss the kids or work!
- JOURNAL – How (and when) do you confuse your work and personal lives? What impact does running a business together have on your marriage? How do you share these difficulties with each other? How would you know your partner is struggling? Do you feel safe enough to tell them?
- PERSONAL REFLECTION – What are the signs and symptoms that your marriage is a) going really well, and b) showing signs of stress? Where are you similar in what you’ve noticed? Where do you differ? What do you need to do to get on the same page?
